This Conference is a forum held every other year where practitioners, researchers and industry leaders meet and exchange knowledge and insights concerning the cross-disciplinary field of design and emotion. The conference calls for your contribution to this exciting international forum of research and practice representing academic, design and business communities.

Full Papers, Short Papers (Posters) and Design Cases

D&E Conference invites practitioners and researchers to submit research papers and design cases. Submissions addressing issues of Design & Emotion are invited from extended communities beyond design studies, such as computer science, HCI, psychology, cognitive science, social science, humanities, engineering, health sciences, marketing and business. Detailed guidelines for proposal authoring are available on the conference website.

Full Papers are expected to contribute widely applicable long-lasting knowledge to the discipline. Accepted papers will be presented in the conference program and published in the proceedings. The paper length is a maximum of 12 pages (approximately 4,000-5,000 words plus figures and tables) in the specified format.

Short Papers (Posters) are expected to describe research that is more appropriate for the interactive poster session. The paper length should be a maximum of 5 pages (approximately 2,000 words plus figures and tables) and an additional page containing a full-page image of the poster in the specified format for the publication in the conference proceedings. The first submission requires a short paper manuscript without the poster page.

Design cases are invited for submission to present design projects that address issues and insights in design and emotion, communicate and discuss your approach to enhance emotional effects. Design case submissions must include a summary description in a maximum of 5 pages (approximately 2,000 words) in the specified format and a maximum of 30 slides illustrating the design, design process and use.

Call for Special Topic Sessions: Topics and Papers

Special Topic Sessions focus on specific emerging areas of research and practical interest concerning Design and Emotion. The topic proposal deadline for special topic sessions is February 15, 2010. The deadline for submission of full paper and design cases is March 15, 2001.

(See the detail on the conference website.)

Call for workshops

Researchers, educators and practitioners are invited to submit proposals for workshops. Workshops will be held on October 4, 2010 prior to the main program of the conference. The purpose is to provide a platform for presenting and discussing novel ideas and emerging issues in a less formal and possibly more focused way than the conference itself. The format of each workshop is to be determined by the organizers, but each workshop is expected to include ample time for general discussion.

Submission and Review Process

Submission and review processes will be handled by our conference system. All submissions will have a blind review process with at least two reviewers. All submissions accepted in the second review will be asked to submit the final manuscripts in the camera-ready format. The detailed authoring guideline is available at the conference website.

Topics

Design & Emotion is the overarching theme of the conference. This year, the conference adds a particular focus on Design & Emotion in emerging societal issues of our lives and living environments. Another focus is on strategic roles of Design & Emotion in business. The areas of these foci include fundamental research into Design & Emotion that further enhances our intellectual foundation as well as the emotional aspects of the following topic areas:

Design for Wellbeing

    Healthcare

    Elderly Living

    Food, Health and Culture

    Universal/ Inclusive Design

Design for Environments

    Sustainable Lifestyle

    Product and System Life Cycle

Interaction and Context-sensitivity

    Human-Robot Interaction

    Product Adaptation

    User Learning

Service Design

    Modeling Experiences

    Retail Design

Strategic Design and Business

    Decision-Making

    Business Models

    Branding

Foundation for Design and Emotion

Temporality, Uncertainty and Polarity of Emotion

    Affordance, Semiotics, Value and Emotion

    Research Methodologies

    Design Methodologies

    Theoretical Foundations

Philosophical Foundations and Implications to Design

Important Dates -Revised

March 15 New official deadline for paper, design case and workshop submissions

May 15 Notification of acceptance for the first reviewing

June 15 Deadline for revised paper, design case and workshop submissions

July 15 Final acceptance notification

July 31 Deadline for Early Registration—required for authors, to be in proceedings

August 15 Submission for camera-ready manuscripts

October 4 Tutorials and Workshops

October 5-7 Conference

Conference Venue

Spertus Institute

610 S. The Blues expresses the emotional journey of our life experience. Sorrow and joy, desire and apathy, agony and comfort, and love and despair are woven into the colorful sounds of the Blues. Things and events in our life always have multiple meanings and multiple emotional responses and so do the Blues. The 7th International Conference on Design and Emotion calls for rich discourse on a full spectrum of complex emotional experiences and their implications to Design. During the conference, you will also have opportunities for emotional experiences with the Chicago Blues.

Conference Organizers

Conference Chair: Judith Gregory

Organizing Committee Chair: Keiichi Sato

Program Committee Chair: Pieter Desmet

www.id.iit.edu

E-mail: de2010@id.iit.edu

http://www.id.iit.edu/de2010/

http://www.designandemotion.org/

Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, 350 N.
Expression and the Inner: 6th Inter-University Workshop on Mind, Art, and Morality

Expression and the Inner: 6th Inter-University Workshop on Mind, Art, and Morality
April 8 - 10, 2010, University of Oviedo
The workshop: The Inter-University Workshop on Mind, Art and Morality promotes the relation among different areas of philosophy; more specifically, the Workshop aims at exploring those issues where ethical, aesthetical and the philosophy of mind’s discussion topics converge and interweave. In former editions, the Workshop has been devoted either to the work of the philosophers Richard Wollheim, Jonathan Dancy, Christine Korsgaard, Shaun Nichols or to broad subjects such as the Philosophy of Music (with the presence of Peter Kivy, Noël Carroll or Derek Matravers). In this occasion, the Workshop will receive David H. Finkelstein who will present his recent research on first-person authority.

Contributed Papers: We invite philosophers and other scholars interested in discussing these or other related topics to join the Workshop, for an exchange of ideas on these subjects. Contributions focused on David Finkelstein’s book are especially encouraged, but papers on any aspect of the first-person authority, self-knowledge, expression, conscious and unconscious states, are also welcome. Papers should be about 15 pages long (5000 words), to be presented in 40 minutes maximum, and to allow 20 minutes discussion. Extended abstracts, of about 2000 words, will also be accepted for review.

Submission deadline: February 1, 2010

    Luis M. Valdés-Villanueva at teorema@uniovi.es

Third Annual Philosophy and the Arts Conference at Stony Brook Manhattan

Third Annual Philosophy and the Arts Conference at Stony Brook Manhattan
March 26-27, 2010
Keynote Speaker – Dr. Simon Critchley
Chair of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research

The Masters program in Philosophy and the Arts at Stony Brook University in Manhattan studies the intersections of art and philosophy. In our efforts to further the dialogue between these complexly related fields, we offer this conference as an interdisciplinary event. We welcome participants working in a variety of disciplines and media to respond to this year’s topic:

“Collectively”

During a period marked by globalization, proliferating social networking sites and virtual forums, and a reissued political call for increased civic participation, investigating the nature of ‘the collective’ continues to be a vitally important project. The term ‘collective’ itself is heavily politicized, foregrounding the tension between the individual and the whole. While groups may capitalize upon collective force to secure political visibility and achieve goals, collectivization is often a vehicle of homogenization and silencing. Yet many collectives intentionally jeopardize individual visibility as a form of critique. Artists’ collectives like the Critical Art Ensemble and the Wooster Collective, and philosophical collaboratives such as Deleuze-Guattari, question the value of the singular and identifiable, as well as problematizing the market economy that sustains artistic and academic norms. In any case, the notion of the collective raises questions of authority and agency as they relate to knowledge, ownership, and intersubjectivity. What are the mechanisms through which collectives form, maintain their coherence, and engage with other entities? How do various types of collections—museum holdings, units of information, digital and material objects, or persons—relate to classificatory systems, globalized and virtual commerce, and rapidly evolving technologies?

As collectives arise and disperse, we often find ourselves with a dearth of criteria by which to judge their success and viability. This conference will investigate the forms, motivations, methods, justifications, and consequences of persons and things acting collectively. We encourage submissions from across the artistic and theoretical disciplines that approach these themes from practical and theoretical perspectives. Projects may be collaborative in nature, and may examine the collective as an entity or activity.

SUBMISSIONS:

We welcome the submission both of original academic papers and of artwork for exhibition or performance, relating to the above themes, from graduate students across disciplines. All submissions should be formatted for blind review, and suitable for a 20-minute presentation. Please visit click on the appropriate link below for complete submission instructions. All submissions must be received by January 13th, 2010 in order to be considered by the conference review committee. Submitters will be notified of the committee’s decision regarding their work via email no later than February 4th, 2010.

The conference will take place on Friday March 26th and Saturday March 27th at Stony Brook Manhattan, 401 Park Ave. South. Feel free to contact the conference coordinator for help with additional questions at philosophyartconference@gmail.com.
